Amend Michigan Law to Allow Parents to be Paid Caregivers for Disabled Children

Amend Michigan Law to Allow Parents to be Paid Caregivers for Disabled Children
The Issue
I am a mother of two autistic children who require intensive care and therapy. This situation has made it impossible for me to maintain regular employment. My story is not unique in Michigan; there are many parents like me, struggling daily with the financial challenges of caring for disabled children. Did you know the cost of autism is staggering? It can cost a typical family $60,000 per year and expenses are rising even further.
The current law in our state does not allow parents to be paid caregivers for their disabled children. This law overlooks the fact that caring for a child with disabilities often goes beyond the typical parental duties and into full-time caregiving territory - a job that requires significant time, effort, and specialized skills.
According to data from the U.S Census Bureau, about 10% of children in Michigan have one or more developmental disabilities (source: U.S Census Bureau). These families are caught in an unforgiving cycle where they cannot work due to caregiving responsibilities but receive no compensation for their tireless efforts.
We propose an amendment to this law that would allow parents of disabled children in Michigan to become paid caregivers. Such changes will provide much-needed financial support and recognize the valuable work these parents do every day.
