Amend Leamington Bylaws to Allow Residential Chicken Keeping

The Issue

My wife, a brave survivor of breast cancer, has found an unexpected source of joy and purpose in the wake of her ordeal - chickens. Their presence has provided her with a sense of peace that has been instrumental in managing her anxiety and depression. However, our town's current bylaws prevent us from keeping these therapeutic animals in our residential area.

Leamington is known for its agricultural roots and embracing nature's bounty. Yet, the existing bylaw restricts residents like us from raising chickens in our backyards. This seems contradictory to the spirit of our community.

In many cities across Canada, urban chicken farming is not only allowed but encouraged as it promotes sustainability and local food production. For instance, Toronto permits up to four hens per property (Source: City of Toronto Bylaws). Chickens are quiet creatures that produce fresh eggs while also contributing to natural pest control.

We understand concerns about noise or sanitation may arise; however, with proper care and management practices which we are committed to uphold, these issues can be mitigated effectively.

By amending this bylaw not only would we be fostering sustainable living but also providing therapeutic support for individuals like my wife who find solace in caring for these animals.

We urge Leamington officials to consider this amendment allowing residential chicken keeping under regulated conditions. Please sign this petition if you believe everyone should have access to their own sources of healing within their homes.
