Amend UK Law to Recognise Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as a Living Guru, Not a Religious Book

Sikhs hold their holy scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, in the highest regard, viewing it as the embodiment of their 10 Gurus, in accordance with the command of the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. His directive established that Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the Eternal Guru — a Living Guru that embodies the spiritual authority, wisdom, and guidance of the Sikh Gurus. It is revered not simply as a book of teachings but as a living presence and a guide for the community.

Recognising Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as a living Guru would provide greater legal protection, ensuring that any harm or disrespect shown towards it is treated with the same seriousness as harm directed at a person. This change would acknowledge and respect the unique role Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji plays in the Sikh faith. It would represent a significant step toward religious equality and understanding, while also helping to prevent incidents of disrespect or desecration. Legal recognition would provide recourse for such acts, reinforcing societal respect for religious diversity.

However, without adequate consequences or official recognition, acts of disrespect could persist or even escalate, leaving the Sikh community feeling marginalised and misunderstood. Such neglect risks undermining social cohesion and mutual respect. Failure to act now may erode confidence in the legal system’s ability to safeguard diverse religious expressions, potentially causing lasting harm to community relations.

ਯੂ.ਕੇ. ਦੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬੇਅਦਬੀ, ਬੇਅਦਬੀ ਨਹੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਮੁਲਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੀ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਾਗਤੀ ਜੋਤ ਨਹੀਂ। 

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦਸਾਂ ਗੁਰੂਆਂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜਾਗਤੀ ਜੋਤ ਗਿਆਰਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੇਦ-ਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਸਿਖਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਹਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਕੀ ਦੇਹ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਉਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਕਿੰਤੂ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। 

ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬੇਅਦਬੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਅੰਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ  ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਪਚਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਓਹੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਮਿਲਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਆਮ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। 

ਜੇ ਇਹ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਊਣਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਅਦਬੀਆਂ ਤੋ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਦਮ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। 

ਜਿਸ ਤਰਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੇਅਦਬੀਆਂ ਵਧ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਇਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਚਿਤਾਵਨੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਮਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਹੁਣ ਨਾ ਸੰਭਲੇ ਤਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਉਠਾਉਣਾ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਸੋ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਦਮ ਪੱਟਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ।
