For 38 years, my family has cherished a tradition of gathering at our cherished property in the municipality of Grey Highlands. This slice of land isn't just property; it’s a family gathering place where generations have shared laughter, stories, and moments in the serene embrace of nature. It's here, amidst our camper trailers, that we've found joy and solace, especially on weekends and during our rare holiday weeks. Yet, recently, I was reported for operating an "illegal campground" on my land. This report stems from a Grey Highlands bylaw that restricts the use of recreational vehicles like travel trailers and camper trailers on personal property.

This bylaw, while perhaps originally well-intentioned, fails to recognize the difference between a commercial campground and a gathering space for family. I'm not running a business; I'm preserving a family legacy. In a time when family connection is more precious than ever, does it make sense to dismantle spaces that nurture this connection?

Furthermore, restricting the use of recreational vehicles on private properties can limit residents' freedoms and enjoyment of their own land. Many families, like mine, utilize trailers not for profit but for the sheer joy of coming together in a private and respectful manner. The bylaw, as it stands, disrupts this joy and imposes unnecessary limitations on family gatherings.

We are calling upon the authorities in Grey Highlands to consider the amendment of this bylaw. We propose that exceptions be made for properties that use recreational vehicles solely for family gatherings, clearly separating the difference from commercial operations. Such an amendment would not only protect beloved traditions but would enrich the community spirit, acknowledging the foundational role of families and generations to come, while ensuring that regulations support, rather than hinder, communal well-being.

Let's work towards a just solution that recognizes the value of family and the tradition of gathering in non-commercial, familial frameworks. I urge the community, and concerned citizens of Grey Highlands and beyond to join me in signing this petition.
