Amend garbage collection schedule near school zones

The Issue

As parents, our children’s safety is always our top priority. Every morning and afternoon during school drop-off and pick-up times, the streets surrounding our local schools become bustling hubs of activity. Unfortunately, during these critical hours, garbage collection trucks also make their rounds, as per the existing City of Dearborn Heights Ordinance § 18-358. This timing not only creates hazardous conditions but also leads to an increase in traffic violations issued to our hard-working parents.

The concurrent presence of garbage trucks and children creates unnecessary risk. Imagine the chaos: large trucks maneuvering through crowded streets, while young children, often distracted, navigate their way to and from school. The situations heightened risks imperil our children and stress us as parents, constantly worried about their safety.

Moreover, the issuance of traffic tickets to parents who inadvertently stop or park in non-permitted areas due to the congestion is an added burden. Families should be focused on ensuring their kids arrive safely, not on the looming possibility of fines resulting from infrastructure and scheduling inefficiencies.

The solution is simple yet profound: amend the collection schedule stipulated under Ordinance § 18-358. By rescheduling garbage collection to avoid overlapping with school drop-off (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) and pick-up times (2:00 PM - 4:00 PM), we can significantly improve safety and efficiency during these peak hours.

Revisiting the ordinance and adjusting these collection times not only prioritizes our children’s safety but also reflects the city’s commitment to fostering a community environment conducive to all its residents' needs.

We urge the Dearborn Heights City Council, the Mayor of Dearborn Heights, and the Department of Public Works to hear our concerns and take swift action in rectifying this issue. Such a change will ensure a safer, less congested environment for our children and a more harmonious community overall.

We appeal to all local residents, concerned parents, and stakeholders to support this call for change to protect our children and enhance our community living standards. Please sign this petition to urge the necessary amendments to Ordinance § 18-358.
