Refuse to show "Mulan" in American movie theaters

The Issue

Liu Yifei (劉亦菲), lead actress in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Mulan, has recently expressed her unapologetic support for the brutal physical violence being inflicted upon the civilian population of Hong Kong.

The people of Hong Kong have recently taken to the streets to protest a bill that would allow the extradition of suspected enemies of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to mainland China, as well as the Chinese government's persecution of ethnic and religious minorities and continued encroachments upon Hong Kong's political autonomy and democratic traditions.

The story of Mulan conveys powerful themes like protecting the innocent, but in this case, the person who is playing the heroine and protector, in a sad twist of irony, is definitively taking the side of bullies and villains. This despite the fact that she is a naturalized American citizen who enjoys the benefits of democracy and personal liberty.

As Americans, there's only so much that we can do about what goes on in other parts of the world. There comes a time, though, when we have an opportunity to stand up for what we believe in. The protesters in Hong Kong are fighting for freedom, democracy, and self-determination. These are ideas that Americans hold dear, ideas to which we aspire as a society.

For American companies with strong values, it would be irresponsible to support and profit off of a commercial endeavor whose figurehead openly supports oppression and state violence against unarmed civilians.

We, the undersigned, implore you, as the major movie theater chains in the United States, to refuse to show Mulan in your movie theaters. We ask you to take a stand for freedom, decency, and human rights, and to stand against tyrants and bullies.
