Hi Plastic-free Supporters:
I wanted to pose a little food for thought this Friday morning.
According to NCSL.org, 8 states have banned the use of plastic bags —California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New York, Oregon and Vermont.
HOWEVER, each of those states still accepts billions of single-use plastic bags, plastic filler, plastic air padding and more by way of ecommerce packages shipped from giants like Amazon and many others. How is this not being discussed in relation to this legislation?
I have engaged with our local legislators on Long Island on this topic and will update on any progress here at the county or state level but I would urge you to look into this in your own regions and ask the same question. How did we ban plastic bags at retailers and avoid the fact that online shopping is a HUGE contributor to the same type of waste?
It does not make sense that we are not looking at ecommerce plastic waste which is quickly surpassing in-person retail. At the very least, it would be appropriate for consumers to say 'hold the plastic bag' at online checkout in the same way we can do in person, especially during a pandemic. Hence, we need to put more pressure on the online stores we shop on to add this (or those our neighbors shop on).
Please post thoughts or other ideas or email plastics@fondgroup.com if you wish to do so privately.
We have exciting updates to share soon RE progress with this petition against Amazon so please stay tuned.
Have a great weekend and please share this update and the petition so we can raise awareness on this issue!
