Amazon.com Disclose and Stop Using Toxic Scented Chemicals in Warehouses and Packaging
The Issue
Why do Amazon packages always smell very strongly of chemicals? It has become expected that items delivered in their blue and white bubble envelopes will always be soaked in a “Febreze-like” smell, but I just had a package delivered where the scent was not on the packaging, but on the package itself, most likely a sanitizer or fumigant used in the warehouse.
The package delivered (an item for my toddler) reeked so badly that upon opening it I immediately became nauseous and lightheaded and had to put it into the garage. The scent permeated the room long after the package was gone and lingered on the counter where the package had briefly touched. Why is this happening? What chemicals are my family and I needlessly being exposed to? What chemicals are being leached into the environment from these packages?
Google yields years of complaints over the issue commonly saying the packages and contents smell like Febreeze, mothballs, bug bombs and other chemicals. Saying that the smell lingers and contaminates everything it touches including food items, causing nausea, gagging, headaches and lightheadedness.
As someone who is sensitive to chemicals and a concerned parent, I have found myself increasingly worried about the safety of products delivered from Amazon.
Whatever chemicals their using poses health risks not only to employees working in these environments but also to consumers who receive these packages at home and the environment!
We call upon Amazon's corporate responsibility team to take immediate action. We demand transparency about the chemical substances we have been exposed to and urge them to find safer alternatives. Our health and the health of our children should not be compromised.
Please join us as we petition against this hazardous practice. Sign this petition today.
