Allow Urban Chicken Keeping in Connellsville

The Issue

An increasing number of people are seeing the value of homesteading and self-reliance, a trend that is starting to transform our city landscapes. Unfortunately, current laws within the city of Connellsville prohibit citizens from participating fully in this rewarding practice, particularly with regard to raising chickens. Many people have found that raising small-scale poultry provides them with healthier, tastier eggs, reduces food waste and supplies beneficial nutrients to enrich garden soil. Neighboring South Connellsville permits urban chickens, reinforcing that this approach to sustainability and self-sufficiency is practical and beneficial. Furthermore, modern, responsible chicken-keeping does not result in noise, odor, or any other negative impacts on the community. We propose a reasonable limit of five hens (no roosters) per household with requirements for secure, confined housing to keep both chickens and community safe. Join us in requesting that the City Council of Connellsville adapt its laws to reflect the changing times and to promote urban sustainability. Sign the petition to help make urban chicken keeping a viable practice for all Connellsville residents.
