The Issue

Wisconsin law should be updated to allow unmarried non biological parents who intentionally plan and raise a child together to establish legal parentage at birth without requiring a lengthy adoption process.

Many children are born into loving families where both parents have agreed from the beginning to raise the child together. However, if the parents are not married, the non-biological parent may be left without legal rights and responsibilities, creating uncertainty for both the child and family.

This petition asks Wisconsin legislators to create a legal process that allows intended parents in unmarried same-sex relationships to establish parentage at birth when both parties consent and intend to raise the child together.

This change would:

Protect children by providing legal security from birth.
Reduce costly and time-consuming court proceedings.
Ensure both parents can make medical, educational, and legal decisions for their child.
Promote fairness and equal treatment for all Wisconsin families.
I urge Wisconsin lawmakers to introduce and support legislation that recognizes the realities of modern families and protects the best interests of children.
