The Issue

As a tow operator with years of experience on the road, I have witnessed numerous close calls that have brought me perilously close to danger. The unfortunate reality is that the amber lights traditionally used on tow trucks have lost their power to alert drivers, as they are now ubiquitous. This has desensitized the public, who too easily ignore these beacons that should signal caution. Every six days, a tow operator loses their life, a harrowing statistic highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures. To bridge this gap, I urge for the introduction of blue lights on the rear of tow trucks.

Adding blue lights is not merely a preference; it's a critical safety enhancement. The prevalence of amber lights has diluted their effectiveness, so a distinct color like blue, already associated with emergency response, could capture attention and prompt drivers to move over and slow down. This could provide us, tow operators, with the space necessary to perform our vital duties without unnecessarily risking our lives.

Picture this scenario: You're on the highway and see an emergency vehicle with its distinctive blue lights flashing. You instinctively slow and move over, respecting the space of the professionals handling a potentially dangerous situation. The introduction of blue lights on tow trucks aims to evoke this same, immediate reaction, ensuring the safety of hardworking men and women who put themselves at risk to keep the roads clear.

Statistics show that a tow truck driver is killed every six days. This is an unacceptable loss of life that can be mitigated with simple legislative changes. By supporting this proposal to include blue lights on tow trucks, we make a collective stand for safety, for life, and for the acknowledgment of the risks tow operators face.

I implore lawmakers to take this issue seriously and implement the use of blue lights for tow trucks, paving the way for safer roads for both operators and motorists. Please sign this petition to show your support for this crucial change that could save the lives of those who work tirelessly to ensure our roads remain safe and clear.

It is already a law in another state that tow truck operators are allowed to have blue lights to the rear. It is unfortunate, though that it took a tragedy of a tow operator being KILLED for that law to go into effect.

This could save 100 lives, maybe 1,000 or maybe just one. Who knows which one.
