Allow The Timberland Distance Team to Run Shirtless on School Campus

Allow The Timberland Distance Team to Run Shirtless on School Campus
The Issue
Running - especially over long distances - is a physical challenge that puts endurance and mental grit to the test. With the addition of intense heat, the challenge becomes not just about physical fitness but also about fighting off rapid dehydration and overheating. When battling all this while being forced to wear a shirt, these problems become exponentially greater.
Shirts trap heat, impeding the body's natural cooling mechanism, causing athletes to overheat quicker and dehydrate faster. This scenario is detrimental to our performance and extremely hazardous to our health. A study published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine showed dehydration has consistently been shown to impair endurance exercise performance (Kenefick et al., 2021). While a study from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that heat stress increases the risk of athletes experiencing cardiovascular events (Racinais et al., 2015).
Safety should be a priority for all educational institutions including our school. We are not demanding a drastic change, but rather a simple modification to our dress code. Allowing distance runners to train shirtless, especially in peak heat conditions, promotes safer training practices. This fight isn't just about a shirt - it's about ensuring that our school enables athletes like us to safely push our boundaries and excel in our chosen sports.
We need your support. Sign this petition, and stand with the Timberland High School Distance Track Team athletes who fight against needless barriers in their pursuit of excellence.
