Allow term time holidays for all employees with allocated leave
Allow term time holidays for all employees with allocated leave
The Issue
As a parent working in a sector where my holidays are pre-determined by my employer, I find myself in a difficult situation each year. My children must adhere to the strict school calendar while my holidays rarely align with these crucial times. It is not just myself facing this dilemma, but many other parents who work in sectors such as the military, emergency services, or various operational roles.
This disparity leads to significant tension within families as parents wish to spend quality time with their children but find it practically impossible without incurring penalties. Schools and local authorities often levy fines against parents who take their children out of school during term time without approved reasons. This is not a choice parents like myself wish to make; rather, it is a necessity created by circumstances beyond our control.
A survey conducted by the Resolution Foundation found that over one-third of UK workers have little or no control over their working hours, which frequently clashes with school holidays. It's essential to recognize that not all parents have the luxury of choosing when to take their annual leave. Denying these families the opportunity to spend quality family time together not only affects parental relationships but can adversely impact a child’s wellbeing too.
The current system does not address the realities of shifting work patterns in today's world. Therefore, I propose that schools and local authorities adopt a more flexible approach towards parents whose leave is determined by their employer. This can be facilitated through negotiated agreements or special exemptions that allow for term-time leave without penalties if proof of employment requirements can be substantiated.
It's time for our education systems and local authorities to recognize the unique challenges faced by parents with allocated holidays. Please sign this petition to urge local councils and educational bodies to allow parents with employer-assigned leave to take term-time holidays without facing fines. Support this change to bring much-needed balance to our work and family lives, ensuring fair treatment for all families.
