Allow teens to have phones even while grounded (US)

Allow teens to have phones even while grounded (US)
The Issue
Imagine being a teenager who suddenly finds themselves in a dangerous or even life-threatening situation, such as a house fire or a robbery. Now imagine that the only thing denying them the ability to contact emergency services is that they're grounded and their phone has been taken away. This is the reality for many teens today, including myself. As a teenager, being grounded often means losing phone privileges as a form of discipline. However, this also deprives us of a vital lifeline to call for help in urgent situations.
The importance of having access to a phone during emergencies cannot be overstated. According to a report by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), over 80% of emergency calls are made from mobile phones, underscoring their crucial role in personal safety. Without a phone, teenagers, who are among the most vulnerable, may not be able to reach emergency services quickly and efficiently.
This petition aims to strike a balance between parental control and ensuring the safety of teenagers. While it's important for parents to discipline their children and limit distractions like social media or games, access to making and receiving calls, especially to emergency numbers, should never be compromised. There are technological solutions available, such as parental control apps that allow for the blocking of apps or setting limits on phone usage, while still enabling calls to be made and received.
We urge all parents, guardians, and policymakers to consider the safety implications of denying phone access entirely while grounding a teen. Safety must never be compromised, and a system that allows limited phone access should be implemented.
Please join us in ensuring that every teen has the ability to connect with emergency services when they need it the most. Sign this petition to support allowing teens to have phones even while grounded, ensuring their safety in dangerous situations.
