The Issue

As a dedicated classroom teacher in Princeton, TX, I am deeply passionate about the power of books and the vital role they play in shaping young minds. I strongly believe in the value of modeling reading with real, physical books, not just relying on digital readings or videos where students passively watch someone else read on a screen. This personal interaction with books is crucial in developing critical reading skills, fostering imagination, and instilling a lifelong love for learning in our students.

However, recent policies have restricted our access and ability to keep and read books within our classrooms. Many of these policies aim at regulating book content but end up inadvertently limiting our ability to inspire and engage students with diverse and rich voices. There is a fear of books being removed due to arbitrary content issues, leaving teachers in a challenging position where digital platforms are becoming our default option.

This situation is detrimental not only to teachers who want to curate quality reading lists but also to students who miss out on the multifaceted experience reading real books offers. The importance of having books available in the classroom cannot be overstated, as they are tools that aid comprehension, provide historical contexts, and give students access to creative narratives and critical thinking exercises that no screen can offer.

I am calling on the Princeton Independent School District and local educational authorities to take action by revisiting and revising these restrictive policies. Teachers should have the autonomy to choose age-appropriate and educational books for their classrooms. Implement a review system that respects educators' professional judgments while ensuring educational material is both inclusive and beneficial for our students' diverse needs.

Together, we can create an educational environment that values and encourages the art of reading by providing students with ample opportunities to engage with books firsthand. Let’s make strides towards a more book-friendly policy that supports our educational mission. Please support this petition and help us make a compelling case to allow access to books freely in our classrooms once again. Sign this petition to ensure every child in Princeton, TX, has the chance to explore the world through the pages of a book.

Responded
Hello, Thank you for reaching out and for your passion on this important issue. As a strong advocate for education, I firmly believe that physical books play a vital role in the classroom. They are not only essential tools for learning, but also help foster imagination, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for reading. Teachers should have access to a wide range of AGE-APPROPRIATE, diverse books to support student growth and engagement. I support our educators having the resources they need (including classroom libraries) to create rich learning environments for all students. I will continue to advocate for policies that prioritize student learning and ensure that books remain accessible in our classrooms. Thank you again for your commitment to our students and educators.
