Scarves. Desirable, fashionable and most importantly warm, comforting articles of clothing are not a uniform option at Green Bay High School. Why is that? Scarves look nice and keep you warm during those rough, long cold winter days. The uniform already doesn’t accommodate warmth, you’re simply allowed undershirts and tights to go under skirts. Many classrooms still don't have good enough heating systems for brutal winter weather, and being cold is not helpful when you are trying to focus on school work. This also risks sickness, leading to lower attendance. It's unreasonable for students to be punished for trying to keep healthy and warm.
If the school were to design a scarf that'd be great aswell, and we should still be allowed to wear our own ones. School uniforms already cost plenty overall, and it's probable that an official GBHS scarf would be pricey due to logo embroidery. This can be assumed as many other NZ schools sell their uniform scarves for $30-$50. If people choose to spend that money that's fine. However, if it were to be enforced as the only option it would be inconsiderate to people who cannot afford a scarf with the school logo on it.
Overall the students of GBHS should be allowed to wear a scarf whether it is an official school scarf or one they already own.
Reasons why we should be allowed to wear a scarf:
To keep warm:
- The uniform does a less than ideal job at retaining warmth without excessive layering, considering we aren’t allowed to wear pants beneath long skirts, nor are we allowed beanies or gloves, and we don’t have a long shirt/blouse.
- Many classrooms still don't have good enough heating systems for brutal winter days.
How this impacts School life:
- Cold weather gets people sick leading to missed school days and dropping attendance rates.
- Lack of warmth makes it harder to focus on school work.
Individualism:
- Allowing small accessories such as scarves lets students express themselves and their style within boundaries of the school rules.
- Scarves are presentable and appealing, and can act as another item to elevate the look of the GBHS uniform.
