Allow Students to Use Their Phones During Class Time In Alabama

Allow Students to Use Their Phones During Class Time In Alabama
The Issue
Navigating through the day-to-day robust curriculum already poses numerous challenges, with the fear of not being able to check my phone for important updates adding to this stress. The current phone policy in our schools prevents students in Alabama from using their phones during instructional time, making us feel disconnected from urgent matters that could occur throughout the day. Some student's have urgent messages to answer or important people to call throughout the day, bringing many of us constant worry.
Did you know that the Pew Research Centre reported that 95% of teenagers have access to a smartphone? This reflects our need to stay connected, especially in emergencies. Many students also utilize their phones for academic purposes such as coordinating group meetings, using educational apps, and researching class-related materials instantly.
The National Education Association emphasizes that incorporating technology into lessons can significantly enhance learning outcomes. Given that we live in a digital age, students should not be penalized for needing to keep their phones on them during class. While rules can be put in place to ensure that usage is related to academic pursuit or necessary communications only, an outright ban seems unnecessary and oppressive.
Join us in urging the Baldwin County School System to revisit and reform their phone policy to alleviate student stress and support our need to stay connected. Please, sign our petition.
