Allow Students to Use Phones in School for Emergency Situations

The Issue

This petition is deeply personal to me as I envision a scenario that strikes fear in my heart: What if an emergency, such as an intruder entering our school, and we needed immediate access to reach 911 for help? In such instances, having our phones on hand wouldn't be just a convenience - it could become a lifeline.

Unfortunately, with current school policies on phone use, many students may be left helpless in an unforeseen emergency situation. Instead of cultivating a safe environment, we could inadvertently be jeopardizing their safety.

According to a 2018 study by the Pew Research Center, 95% of teenagers have access to a smartphone and have become adept at using these devices (source: Pew Research Center, 2018). The use of smartphones goes beyond mere texting and browsing; it forms an integral part of their safety net.

We are not advocating indiscriminate use of phones during instructional time, which can cause classroom disruptions. But we firmly believe that a well-measured policy should be put in place that considers the importance of phones in the context of student safety.

Take the scenario above, where a quick call or message to authorities could save lives. Thus, we are not asking for granting full liberty to use phones during classes for non-academic purposes but asking for reconsideration on the blanket ban for the safety of our children.

Make our schools safer by granting students access to their phones during emergencies. Please, sign this petition and help us make a difference.
