Allow Stillwater residents and downtown staff free parking
Allow Stillwater residents and downtown staff free parking
The Issue
Having lived and worked in Stillwater for most of my life, I have cherished every moment in this beautiful town, from its charming streets to the warm and welcoming community. However, as someone who contributes significantly through taxes and as a dedicated member of the workforce here, I find it unjust that I have to pay extra fees for parking - fees that are essentially levied on facilities and spots that my own tax dollars have helped maintain and develop.
For those of us who work downtown, paying for parking has become a part of our job descriptions. Downtown workers should not have to pay to park because parking is often a requirement to do the job, not a personal choice. Charging employees to park is effectively a pay cut, forcing them to spend their own wages just to show up for work. Many workers already support downtown by buying food, shopping locally, and keeping businesses open year‑round. Parking fees disproportionately hurt lower‑income and hourly workers who have the fewest alternatives.
Many of my fellow residents and colleagues share this sentiment. We are proud members of the Stillwater community, and we believe that the parking lots in our town should be accessible to us freely. After all, the logic is simple: when you pay for something, you should not have to pay again to use it.
Stillwater's downtown area is a vibrant hub that relies on its local workers and residents for its continued success and prosperity. Requiring us to pay additional costs simply to park can be a deterrent, making it difficult for staff to commute and adding unnecessary strain on those who live and work here.
Moreover, free parking would not only be an acknowledgment of our contribution to the community but also an incentive for more businesses to thrive downtown, attracting both locals and newcomers alike. The ripple effect of such a decision could be significant, leading to increased commerce, a stronger economy, and a more connected community.
We call upon the local government to recognize the value of its residents and staff by providing free parking in downtown Stillwater for those who reside and work here. By signing this petition, you support a fair and equitable solution that reflects the hard-earned contributions of Stillwater's community members. Join us in making our voices heard for a more just and accommodating parking policy.
