The Issue

We, the undersigned Registered Nurses, respectfully request that hospital leadership reconsider the decision to require white scrub tops and instead allow us to continue wearing navy blue scrub tops.

When the uniform color was previously changed from white to navy blue, the change was met with overwhelming support from the nursing staff. Navy blue tops provide a more professional and cohesive appearance, remain cleaner throughout the workday, and help distinguish Registered Nurses from nursing students and other clinical personnel. This distinction is important for both patient confidence and clear staff identification.

In addition to improving our professional appearance, the navy blue uniform has had a positive impact on nurse satisfaction and comfort. Feeling confident and comfortable in our work attire contributes to morale in a profession that is already physically and emotionally demanding.

We also recognize that our transition to navy blue uniforms occurred during the hospital’s pursuit of Magnet recognition, an achievement that reflects excellence in nursing and emphasizes nurse engagement and satisfaction. Because this change was so well received by the nursing staff, we are disappointed to learn that we may be required to return to white scrub tops after achieving this important recognition.

We respectfully ask hospital leadership to consider the voices of the nursing staff and allow Registered Nurses to continue wearing navy blue scrub tops. We believe this decision supports professionalism, staff satisfaction, and a positive experience for both nurses and the patients we care for.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
