Allow seniors the choice between purple AND white caps and gowns for graduation

The Issue

Recently the seniors at Mt Hope High School were informed that we must all wear purple at our graduation. I know many students including myself were upset by this news. We were told this choice honors equality, inclusion, and unity, however, I believe this is exactly the opposite of those three words. I personally do not believe this makes me feel like my own person. Equality does not mean we all have to be the same when it comes to what we wear. I do not believe I have a say in what I get to wear. As for inclusion I do not feel accepted to be my whole self. Being yourself means having a choice in what you feel comfortable in whether that be an environment or even clothing for that matter. Taking the option to choose between purple or white is not fair for the students given previous years students were allowed to express themselves and it did not matter the color they were wearing. Not everyone has to be the same, unity does not mean all dressing the same and being the same. It means coming together as a whole. In my opinion this is us coming together as we take the day to appreciate all the hard work we have done. To some it may seem like equality or inclusion or even unity from the looks of it but us seniors do not feel any of these words resonate with us. Instead we feel unheard. Help bring back the choice between both purple and white caps and gowns. Let us choose be who we want to be before we take this next huge step in our lives.
