Allow self-referral to breast clinics

The Issue

I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer after a long and challenging fight. When I first discovered the lump I was told wait 2 weeks, you are probably perimenopausal. I wait 2 weeks see another GP who tells me it is a milk duct infection and I need antibiotics. I reject this theory and ask for a referral to the breast clinic.I am flabagasted  to be told I would be wasting NHS funding and valuable resources ,to be told that my GP was right. I stand my ground and ask for a second opinion. I leave with a referral.  a month later I am diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in my breast and lymph nodes. It was a battle that required immense strength and resilience, both mentally and physically. This experience opened my eyes to the importance of early detection. Like many others, I learned that time is of the essence when it comes to fighting this disease, and early diagnosis can significantly improve survival rates.

Currently, the process to get screened for breast cancer often involves going through a primary care physician for a referral. This can create unnecessary delays and barriers, preventing timely access to critical diagnostic services. The anxiety and stress of waiting can be overwhelming, especially when every day counts.

In the UK, it is estimated by the NHS that approximately 55,000 women and 370 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and early diagnosis can mean the difference between life and death. Statistics show that early detection through screenings can reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer by up to 25%.

We need a change. We need a system where individuals, both men and women, can self-refer to breast clinics for screening when they notice anything abnormal. This change could lead to earlier detection and treatment, ultimately saving lives. A more direct pathway to screening would empower individuals to take charge of their health and remove barriers that currently impede access to care.

I urge the NHS and the UK Department of Health to consider implementing a self-referral system for breast clinics. By doing so, we can ensure that no person faces enduring delays that could critically affect their health. Please stand with me in advocating for this crucial change.

Sign this petition to help save lives through early detection. Together, we can build a healthcare system that is more responsive to the needs of those at risk.
