The Issue

The town of Halton Hills, Ontario is a vibrant community where families thrive and children play safely. However, a challenge has arisen for residents who wish to foster a healthy and active lifestyle for their children. Currently, BY-LAW NO. 2019-0008 restricts the placement of temporary recreational equipment, such as basketball hoops and hockey nets, on a highway. The roadways in question are quiet residential streets.

The purpose of this petition is to secure a seasonal exemption to this by-law, allowing residents the freedom to place and use such equipment from April to September. This period coincides with the spring and summer months when children are most out of school, and when outdoor activities contribute positively to their physical and mental well-being.

Having basketball hoops and hockey nets on quiet streets not only encourages physical fitness but also nurtures community spirit. Neighbours, both young and old, gather to engage in sports, fostering bonds and cultivating a sense of belonging. Moreover, these activities provide a healthy alternative to screen time and serve as venues for children to learn teamwork and sportsmanship.

As residents of Halton Hills, it's essential to adapt to the needs of our community and support an active, healthy lifestyle for our children. We urge the town council to consider this request seriously and make adjustments to the current by-law. The benefits of physical activity, community engagement, and improved neighbourhood relationships are undeniable.

Please sign this petition to show your support for a seasonal exemption to BY-LAW NO. 2019-0008 that would permit temporary recreational equipment on quiet residential streets. Together, we can create a more vibrant, engaging, and healthy community for all Halton Hills residents.
