Allow Scooters at Pier 62 Skatepark in NYC
The Issue
The freedom and joy that come from the exhilarating feeling of riding a scooter are unparalleled. As an avid scooter rider, the local Pier 62 Skatepark in New York City is close to my heart. It offers the ideal environment with its superior ramps and fly-out ramps, perfect for catching high air and learning new tricks.
However, scooter enthusiasts like myself face a significant barrier—the current regulations do not permit scooter use at Pier 62 Skatepark. This policy restricts many from experiencing the thrill and satisfaction of this fantastic skatepark. Skateboarders and roller skaters have long enjoyed these facilities, but scooter users also deserve an opportunity to practice and hone their skills in a safe and established environment.
Pier 62 Skatepark provides the perfect setting to foster community and skill development for scooter riders. Denying access limits our potential and stifles our passion. Allowing scooters would support a broader and more inclusive user base, encouraging new riders to engage with the sport and helping existing riders to enhance their abilities.
Cities worldwide, including several in the U.S., have recognized the growth and popularity of scooter riding and have updated their regulations to accommodate scooters in public skateparks. It's time for New York City to join this progressive movement and take the necessary steps to adjust its policies regarding Pier 62 Skatepark.
By embracing scooters, the park can continue to be a hub for youthful energy and creativity while ensuring the rules adapt to modern urban sporting trends. Safety guidelines and hours specifically designated for scooter use could be established to address any concerns and ensure a harmonious coexistence with other park users.
Join me in urging the New York City Parks and Recreation Department to amend its policies and allow scooters at Pier 62 Skatepark. Let’s create a more inclusive, dynamic, and vibrant space for all riders. Sign this petition and help us ride into a more welcoming and exciting future!
