Residents of Lismore, NSW, who live on large rural properties, face a challenge with the mandatory green waste collection service. While this service is beneficial for urban residents with little space to manage their organic waste, it becomes redundant for those living on expansive properties where natural waste can be effectively managed and recycled onsite.

Rural properties have the advantage of space and often incorporate composting and organic recycling naturally as part of their land management practices. In many cases, large properties are equipped with their own sustainable waste management solutions, including compost piles and natural decomposition areas, which align with environmentally friendly practices.

These residents, however, are still required to pay for a green waste collection service they do not need, leading to unnecessary additional expenses and wear and tear on unsealed roads which are already inadequately maintained. For those living in rural areas surrounding Lismore, this means paying for a service that offers no tangible benefit, which is an inefficient use of resources for both the council and the household.

Allowing rural residents the choice to opt-out would not only provide financial relief but also support more tailored and relevant council services. This petition seeks to encourage Lismore City Council to recognize the unique circumstances of rural property owners and consider implementing an opt-out option for those who already have adequate onsite organic waste management strategies.

The decision to implement this policy was processed without ratepayer consultation and although feedback was 'invited' the policy was pushed through regardless.
