The Issue

Salt Spring Island has always been a place where community spirit thrives, and I’ve dreamt of contributing to this vibrant community by opening a tea room where locals and visitors alike can gather. My vision is to create a welcoming space that not only serves delicious and artisanal teas but also becomes a hub for locals to relax and enjoy the amazing views. However, restrictive local regulations are currently preventing me from making this dream a reality.

The tea room I envision is not just a business; it’s a place where community relationships can blossom and visitors can experience the unique charm of Salt Spring Island and a room surrounded by Royal memorabilia. With its cozy ambiance and rich selection of teas, it will offer a peaceful retreat, encouraging people from different walks of life to engage in meaningful conversations. Beyond serving tea, this space will showcase a world class royal museum.

According to the Salt Spring Island Official Community Plan, enhancing economic diversity and sustainable local businesses are key objectives. A tea room aligns perfectly with these goals, attracting tourists and creating jobs, fostering an economy that relies on the island’s unique strengths rather than larger commercial enterprises.

Moreover, locals and visitors alike are increasingly seeking out experiences that allow them to engage more deeply with the places they visit. A tea room would provide that immersive, authentic experience, reflecting the island’s commitment to community and sustainability.

We urge the local council to reconsider existing regulations that hinder small business operations like mine. I believe a tea room would benefit our beautiful island, enhancing its appeal while respecting the natural and cultural values we all cherish.

Sign this petition to support community-driven initiatives and help a tea room become an inviting reality on Salt Spring Island.

The tea room operates on a reservation basis with one group at a time.  We have amply parking on site and it operates around 8 times per month. We ensure there is no noise or parking issues.  Please help support this amazing experience on Salt Spring.
