Allow Rehabilitation of Animals in Estrie and Monterégie

The Issue

In Quebec, particularly in the regions of Estrie and Monterégie, the recent ban on moving certain wild animals—including raccoons, foxes, and coyotes—has raised significant concerns. This rule prohibits even the transportation of injured or orphaned animals to shelters, presenting an alarming challenge for both wildlife conservationists and compassionate citizens who wish to help vulnerable creatures.  Call 1877346-6763 and complain. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid025J2vaxeo7jzxde2REZVmLQxAJxH4zpBceLY1tKoRyWGBH7doJkFaEZwsL6mcebL6l&id=100064381884146

I'm deeply concerned about this policy. There are humane live tests for rabies that are not only effective but also provide a safer alternative to current measures of decapitation of animals for brain dissection.  https://rapidliverabiestest.wordpress.com/

Furthermore, thanks to the availability of safe vaccines and the ability of animal shelters to quarantine, treat, and vaccinate animals, rehabilitation is a realistic and safe option. The staff in these facilities are well-trained and properly equipped to handle such situations responsibly.

The timing of this ban could not be worse. It coincides with the busy baby season, a critical period when young animals are at their most vulnerable. With the prohibition in place, residents, out of sheer compassion or desperation, might be driven to adopt wild animals themselves. This not only goes against natural wildlife practices but also increases the risk to the public, as these unvaccinated interactions can pose significant health threats.

By banning rehabilitation, the authorities are inadvertently making the situation worse for everyone involved. This policy fails to safeguard the public and the animals; instead, it creates additional risks and fears.

We urge the decision-makers in Quebec to reconsider this ban immediately. Allowing the rehabilitation and safe transportation of these wild animals to specialized shelters can ensure they receive appropriate care without unnecessarily endangering public health or animal welfare.

If you agree that rehabilitation of sick or injured wildlife is essential for the safety and balance of both our communities and natural environment, please lend your support and sign this petition. It's crucial that we come together to advocate for the rights and safety of these animals and the health of our communities. Let's urge the authorities to focus on responsible solutions that benefit both people and wildlife.
