Allow Reasonable Phone Use in OCPS Schools

The Issue

As a student attending an OCPS school in Winter Garden, FL, USA, I am deeply concerned about the current phone policy in place. It is my belief that this policy is outdated and fails to consider the diverse needs of students. Therefore, I am starting this petition to advocate for a change in the phone policy for all OCPS schools and district.

Personal Story:
I have always found it necessary to listen to music while studying or working on school assignments. Music helps me focus and enhances my productivity. However, under the current phone policy, using phones for any purpose other than emergencies is strictly prohibited. This not only hampers my ability to concentrate but also creates an unnecessary barrier between students and their academic success. Even when i’m doing nothing and finish work i can’t even go on my phone after . When there is nothing happening in a school day even at lunch phones can’t be allowed which is sad because we don’t want to just sit there and walk around everyday all day .

Furthermore, I have witnessed instances where students were reprimanded or even had their phones confiscated for simply texting their parents back during class. While it is important to minimize distractions during instructional time, it is equally crucial to acknowledge that emergencies can arise at any moment. By restricting access to phones without considering individual circumstances, we are potentially jeopardizing students' well-being. We are also causing students who do be alone at times to feel even more lonely because they rely on their phones to help them be distracted from feeling lonely even causing students to harm themselves .
Supporting Facts:
1) According to a study conducted by Pew Research Center in 2018 (source: Pew Research Center), 95% of teenagers own or have access to a smartphone.
2) A survey conducted by Common Sense Media (source: Common Sense Media) found that 89% of teenagers reported using their smartphones daily.
3) Numerous studies have shown that listening to music can improve cognitive performance and enhance concentration levels (sources available upon request).

Proposed Solution:
I propose implementing a revised phone policy that allows reasonable use of phones within OCPS schools. This revised policy should take into account the following considerations:

1) Allowing students limited access to their phones during designated times such as lunch breaks or study periods.
2) Encouraging the use of educational apps and resources on smartphones to enhance learning experiences.
3) Establishing guidelines for responsible phone use, including appropriate volume levels for music and respectful communication during instructional time.

By adopting a more flexible phone policy, OCPS schools can create an environment that supports students' individual needs while maintaining a focus on academic success. This change will not only empower students but also foster a sense of responsibility and self-regulation.

In conclusion, I urge the OCPS administration to reconsider the current phone policy and work towards implementing a revised policy that acknowledges the importance of reasonable phone use in today's digital age. Let us prioritize student well-being, individual learning styles, and prepare our students for success in an increasingly connected world.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Together, let us create positive change within our school district!
