In Australia, pets are only allowed to fly as cargo domestically, putting Australia worlds behind from other more pet friendly countries.

Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) announced in July 21' that rules with flying with pets has been changed (Dec 21') to allow them within cabins (with measures in place), however it will be up to the airlines to implement this change to their policies.

Qantas and Jetstar have refused the change, and Virgin have flirted with the idea of being open to change.

Previously, I have flown my dog as cargo interstate from Melbourne to Sydney (return) and have been pretty scarred from the experience, only wanting to repeat this in a 'worse-case' scenario (not saying they mistreated my dog in anyway, but it's obviously more stressful for her being without her family). Since then, we have driven the long 9 hour car ride to accomodate her, making the journey long winded and environmentally wrong. Having family interstate is tough and not being able to see them through COVID was terrible, much like many other families. Now, when I want to fly home to see my family, I have to either rely on friends/family to look after my pup whilst I am away (feeling like I'm leaving half of me behind), pay a minimum of $350 one way to fly her up there with me (which makes the whole round trip over $1K in flights alone), or just not go at all... which unfortunately has been the sad truth.

Australia claims to be a 'pet/dog friendly' country, however why are we years behind other leading countries when it comes to travelling with our furbabies? Our airlines need to be serving us better, and be more inclusive. It's time for us to put the pressure on them to make this change.

As an owner of a small, very well behaved dog, I see no reason as to why dogs who fit in a carrier aren't allowed to fly domestically with their owners. 1 flight a day to/from all major capital cities is enough. These can all be within the same timeframe, with a cap on the amount of time the pets are allowed to spend in the terminals (for hygiene and allergy reasons). There are ways around this to make domestic travel even more accomodating to everyone.

I hope to see this in the near future of travel within Australia.
