Allow personal devices during lunch for BCPS grades K-5
Allow personal devices during lunch for BCPS grades K-5
The Issue
Lunchtime has always been a moment of relaxation and freedom, a break from the structured and focused atmosphere of the classroom. In Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS), students from kindergarten to fifth grade often find themselves with limited options to unwind in a way that feels natural to them. Allowing them to bring their phones and personal devices during lunch would provide an opportunity for self-expression, creativity, and even learning through technology at their own pace.
Having the ability to engage with phones and devices during non-instructional time can enrich students' social interactions and foster a sense of community among peers. It offers a platform where children can share educational content, play collaborative games, or simply enjoy a digital break after their morning lessons. This kind of unstructured time can enhance students' emotional well-being, ultimately contributing to a more balanced and motivated approach to their daily educational activities.
Critics may argue that introducing devices during lunch could lead to distractions. However, the reality is that kids are adept at managing their screen time, especially when they know they need to refocus afterward. In fact, having a designated screen time during lunch could limit the urge to sneak in distractions during class when they know that there's a dedicated time for device usage later.
Furthermore, implementing this policy is practical and straightforward. Teachers and staff can establish clear guidelines and monitor device usage during lunch to ensure the rules are followed. A simple 'devices away when you’re done' policy would ensure that students also participate in physical play and social interaction after their screen time.
The evidence supports this approach. Studies indicate that when managed properly, access to technology in schools enhances student engagement and learning outcomes. This change is not only feasible but beneficial for the holistic development of children, allowing them to grow into tech-savvy individuals capable of balancing education and recreation.
Sign this petition to encourage BCPS to adapt to the changing educational landscape and provide our kids with a sensible, modern approach to lunchtime. Let’s give them the opportunity to use technology responsibly and enjoy their breaks in a way that prepares them for a future increasingly driven by digital innovation.
