Allow Outside Food at Cassville and Monett Aquatic Centers

Allow Outside Food at Cassville and Monett Aquatic Centers
The Issue
Cassville Aquatic Center has been open for 25 years and has allowed patrons to bring in their own food and drinks. Recently, they have begun to enforce a rule that has always existed yet not enforced of absolutely no outside food or drink. Monett Aquatic Center has also adopted this policy.
My son has severe food allergies and while he is protected by the ADA, every visit to the Monett or Cassville Aquatic Center will now become a source of anxiety. Each time, I will have to explain to every single lifeguard why we are bringing in our own food. This situation not only singles him out, but also opens him up to being bullied by others who don't understand why he is being treated differently. This is an unnecessary stress on a child or anyone else in this same position that could be alleviated by a simple policy change.
Cassville and Monett are communities where many families struggle to make ends meet. Many even rely on state aid to pay for their memberships or discount programs. I find it counterintuitive to offer such a great opportunity for low income families to access these facilities and then implement/enforce this policy. Many families spend hours at the aquatic centers at a time and would need some type of food, snack, or drink. The high prices at the aquatic centers' concessions stands only add to the financial burden for these families. Similar to if you have food allergies, I was told that the YMCA may work with these individuals on a case by case basis, but again, this opens up the opportunity for more exclusion. Moreover, the concession stands lack healthy options and fail to cater to various dietary restrictions, leaving many families with few choices.
Allowing outside food would not only support families with specific dietary needs, but would also promote inclusivity and understanding in our community. Other aquatic centers across Missouri have updated their policies to accommodate outside food, acknowledging the diverse needs of their patrons and the importance of fostering a welcoming environment for everyone.
It was brought to my attention one reason for the rule enforcement is due to patrons bringing in alcohol. This is an issue that other venues have resolved by having an empty bottle policy. This allows patrons to bring in their own food, empty water bottles, and still purchase concessions per their convenience.
We urge the Cassville and Monett Aquatic Centers to reconsider their current policy and permit patrons to bring in outside food. This is a small change that could make a significant difference for many visitors, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their time at the center without unnecessary stress or financial strain.
Please sign this petition to help make our aquatic centers more inclusive and welcoming places for all.
