The Issue

My mum discovered she had avery large brain tumour growing at the back of her eyes. The care she received was far from adequate, and during an emergency operation to remove the tumour, she was left blind, developed epilepsy, and suffered other debilitating conditions that significantly reduced her quality of life. Seven years of neglectful actions on the part of her doctors followed. Despite persistent symptoms, she was misdiagnosed and put on three different antibiotic courses for a suspected chest infection. It was eventually discovered that she was in the final stages of brain, lung, and liver cancer. Her suffering ended 13 days later, in unimaginable agony. This could have been avoided. It is cruel to let humans suffer in this way if there is an option to put a stop to there pain and suffering.

This heartbreaking experience is not unique. Countless patients and families endure needless suffering due to our current medical system's limitations regarding end-of-life options. No one should endure such pain and indignity when facing the inevitable outcome of terminal illness.

We call on the NHS to introduce an option for assisted suicide, under strict guidelines and conditions, for terminally ill patients or those living in unbearable suffering. Just as patients have the right to a "Do Not Resuscitate" order, they should also have the right to choose a dignified end while they still have the capacity to make such a decision.

Implementing this option would require a robust framework: consultations with multiple health professionals, mental health assessments, and thorough consideration of each individual’s circumstances to prevent misuse and ensure each request is a genuine expression of the patient’s will.

Countries like Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands have legal provisions for assisted dying, which offer insights into how such a system can be safely integrated and regulated. Their experiences suggest that with proper safeguards, patients can have the freedom to avoid prolonged suffering.

It's time to bring this compassionate option to our healthcare system, respecting the dignity of those who wish to end their lives on their terms when facing terminal illness. Provide patients like my mum, and countless others in similar situations, the opportunity to pass peacefully rather than in pain.

Sign this petition to urge the NHS to consider and implement assisted suicide options for those who desperately need and choose it.
