The Issue

High school is a formative period in a student's life, full of growth, learning, and forming lifelong habits and skills. As a student myself, I have always felt that our school community could benefit from the freedom and trust instilled by having open campus lunch privileges similar to those provided to HB Woodlawn. Being in such close proximity to Ballston, we have the unique opportunity to enrich our lunchtime experience by visiting nearby establishments, whether that's enjoying a Starbucks treat or simply getting a breath of fresh air.

Allowing open campus lunch can foster a sense of responsibility and independence within students. Students who are trusted to return on time will develop the necessary skills to manage their own time effectively—a skill indispensable in both college and the working world. By restricting this opportunity, we are not only denying the pleasure of a more diverse lunch menu and experience but also stifling our personal growth.

Moreover, it's vital to recognize the inequality that currently exists within our district regarding open campus lunch rights. If a fellow high school like HB Woodlawn can be trusted with this privilege, it's only fair and equal that our institution grants us the same opportunity. The double standard makes no sense and undermines the cohesive educational values we stand for.

Safety concerns, a common argument against open campus lunch, can be mitigated by simple regulations and student accountability measures. By instituting a policy where students register their leave and return times, and with open communication between nearby establishments and the school, we can assure that the policy remains secure and organized.

Sign this petition to share the belief that our district's high school students deserve the same responsibility and privileges as others. Support the call for open campus lunch as an essential step towards a fair, balanced, and enriching high school experience for all. Let us join hands to encourage a policy that will benefit the student body as a whole. PLEASE LET US LEAVE!!! Sign now and help our voices be heard.
