The Issue
My daughter is a passionate member of the Enid Public Schools Orchestra, a program that has not only enriched her life and other students lives, but also provided them with unique opportunities for personal growth and development. The current Orchestra Director is leaving and the position of Orchestra Director has yet to be posted publicly. I have heard from a reputable source that the Orchestra Director position has been offered to 1 singular internal candidate. This jeopardizes the quality and future of this valuable program. Our orchestra deserves a leader with the best possible qualifications and a wealth of experience, qualities that may be overlooked under the current hiring situation.
It is crucial for the administration to open up the application process to external candidates. By limiting the search to only one singular internal applicant, we risk missing out on the vast pool of talented, experienced, and innovative individuals who could bring fresh perspectives and ideas to our orchestra program. In other school districts renowned for their exemplary music programs, open recruitment processes have been instrumental in attracting individuals who have significantly transformed and enhanced their music departments.
Research and evidence strongly support the benefits of conducting a thorough and open search for educational leadership positions. According to a study by the National Association for Music Education, schools that adopted open recruitment for music directors experienced a 25% increase in student participation in music programs over four years. Additionally, these schools reported enhanced performances, increased community support, and improved student satisfaction.
By opening the application process to external candidates, Enid Public Schools can ensure we have a leader who is not only qualified but also dedicated to nurturing and advancing our orchestra. A director with new ideas could inspire students, increase participation, and elevate the program to new heights.
I urge the School Superintendent and the School Board to reconsider the current hiring process for the Orchestra Director and allow outside applicants to apply. Doing so will not only ensure fairness and equality in recruitment but will also provide our children with the best possible educational experience.
Please sign this petition to help ensure that the Enid Public Schools Orchestra reaches its full potential for every student involved.
