This petition calls for an urgent review and reform of NSW provisional driver laws that prohibit the use of hands-free, vehicle-integrated navigation systems such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The current regulation was introduced in a different technological era and no longer reflects how modern vehicles are designed or how drivers safely navigate today. Many new vehicles are manufactured with fully integrated infotainment systems where navigation, speed information, and safety alerts are built directly into the dashboard. Despite this, provisional drivers in NSW are restricted from using these systems even when configured hands-free and set before driving.
Public feedback has highlighted a serious concern: while these integrated systems are banned, less safe alternatives remain legal- including paper maps, street directories, and standalone GPS units with outdated mapping. These options can require drivers to look away from the road for longer periods, increasing distraction rather than reducing it.
This petition does not advocate for mobile phone handling, messaging, or interactive device use while driving. It seeks a measured, evidence-based reform that allows provisional drivers to use hands-free, vehicle-integrated navigation systems that are set prior to departure, consistent with regulations already in place in other Australian states.
Road safety policy must evolve alongside vehicle technology. Maintaining outdated restrictions creates confusion, inconsistency across jurisdictions, and unintended safety risks. Updating this regulation would improve clarity, support safer navigation practices, and ensure NSW road rules align with modern vehicle standards and national best practice.
The growing public support for this petition demonstrates a clear expectation that NSW road laws be reviewed using current evidence, technology, and real-world driving conditions. We respectfully urge policymakers to act promptly and initiate a formal review of these provisions.
Thank you to all supporters who continue to advocate for safer, fairer, and more consistent road rules in New South Wales.
