Atualização do abaixo-assinadoAllow NSW P-Plate drivers to use hands-free navigationMomentum Growing for Safer Navigation Rules for NSW P-Plate Drivers

Over the past few days, this petition has sparked widespread discussion across NSW and beyond. Many drivers- young and experienced- have shared their real-world experiences navigating increasingly complex road networks under the current provisional licence restrictions.

To be clear, this petition is not about using mobile phones while driving. It is about allowing hands-free, manufacturer-integrated vehicle systems such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for navigation only, set before driving, with no handheld interaction.

NSW currently permits stand-alone GPS devices and built-in vehicle screens, yet prohibits integrated navigation systems that are specifically designed to reduce distraction and keep drivers’ hands on the wheel. Other Australian states already allow hands-free navigation for provisional drivers under regulated conditions.

Sydney and regional NSW continue to grow, with larger road networks, heavier traffic, and more complex driving environments. Clear, hands-free navigation helps reduce confusion, missed turns, and sudden lane changes- all of which can increase risk, particularly for inexperienced drivers.

I have formally raised this issue with Transport for NSW, the Minister for Roads, and my local MP. I have also been advised that the NSW Centre for Road Safety is currently reviewing policy settings for learner and provisional drivers.

Every signature strengthens the case for evidence-based reform that reflects modern vehicles, modern roads, and real driving conditions.

Thank you for your support and for helping push for safer, more practical road rules in NSW.
