The Issue

Adam’s Gallery in Reigate is an independent art gallery located in the town centre providing  a space where people can come and enjoy art for free. For years, my wife and I  have poured our passion into this gallery, turning it into a vibrant haven for art lovers and a cornerstone for the local creative community. One of the most cherished elements of this gallery is the hand-painted sign on its wall—a piece that resonates with both the atmosphere of the gallery and the quaint charm of Reigate itself while reflecting back to an original sign that existed in the same space over 100 years ago.

This sign is more than a piece of decoration, it is an essential tool for promoting the gallery. In an era where digital marketing dominates, this hand-painted sign offers uniqueness and a personal touch that connects with visitors on a deeper level. It stands as both an invitation and a testament to the authentic experience that Adam’s Gallery provides.

We have now been told to paint over the sign as it does not fit in with planning regulations and is not in keeping with the conservation area. While I understand the need for community standards, it is crucial to find a balance that supports local businesses and their unique identities.
The sign has already been in place for three years.
Losing this sign would not only impact the gallery’s  visibility but would also strip away a part of its identity. The sign is a landmark that attracts visitors. It plays a pivotal role in not just advertising the gallery, but in maintaining its connection with the community and its history.

I am calling on the local council, community members, and art enthusiasts to support me in ensuring that this piece of cultural identity remains intact. Please show your support by signing this petition to keep the hand-painted sign where it belongs—proudly displayed on the wall of Adam’s Gallery. Your signature can make a difference in preserving the essence of local artistry and community spirit.

Thank you so much for your support.
