The Issue

We are two biracial high school students who believe every person deserves to be represented accurately on government identification forms. Although we met through a summer program and live over 5,000 miles apart, we share the same goal: ensuring that multiracial Texans no longer have to choose only one race when applying for a driver's license or state identification card.

Texas currently requires applicants to select a single race on these forms. For people who identify with more than one race, this means being asked to leave part of their identity behind. No one should have to choose between parts of who they are simply to obtain a government-issued ID.

We are calling on the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Texas lawmakers to modernize this process by allowing applicants to select more than one race. This simple change would provide more accurate demographic information while recognizing the diversity of today's Texas.

This is not a new conversation. Similar proposals were introduced decades ago but never became law. Since then, the number of Americans who identify as multiracial has continued to grow, making this issue even more important today. It is time to revisit this conversation and ensure that Texas's identification process reflects the people it serves.

If you believe every Texan deserves to have their identity represented fairly, please sign this petition and help us encourage the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Legislature to make this change.
