The Issue

At Ark Alexandra Academy, a common sentiment among many girls is feeling self-conscious due to current school policies. As a student, it’s disheartening and frustrating to witness how these rules disproportionately affect us. The school dress code restricts us from expressing ourselves through makeup, hair dye, and modern activewear options like cycling shorts or leggings for PE, leaving us feeling invisible and uncomfortable.

The existing dress code heavily leans towards boys, as evidenced by the limited options available to female students: joggers or baggy shorts – items that not everyone feels comfortable wearing. This imbalance not only affects our self-confidence but can also impact our participation and performance in physical education. Allowing us to have clothing choices that make us feel comfortable and confident could dramatically enhance our school experience.

Moreover, many argue that the school setting should foster an environment that respects individuality and encourages self-expression. Allowing makeup, hair dye, and more flexible activewear options would actively contribute to this. Studies have shown that self-expression through appearance contributes positively to personal development and mental health, which are crucial during formative school years.

Furthermore, opponents of these changes may worry about distractions or academic impact. However, research and surveyed opinions in schools that have adopted more relaxed dress codes indicate that these concerns tend to diminish once students are given the freedom to express themselves. In fact, these schools often report higher levels of student satisfaction and engagement.

We believe it is essential to recognize the conversations happening around us, where inclusivity and gender equality in education are being prioritized. Implementing these changes will not only lead to more inclusive environments but, coupled with supportive academic settings, could lead to enhanced learning experiences.

We urge the school authorities, particularly the leadership at Ark Alexandra Academy, to reconsider and update their dress code. Let’s create a more inclusive and supportive environment by allowing makeup, hair dye, and cycling shorts or leggings for PE. Together, we can make these necessary changes for the betterment of all students. Please sign this petition to support a more inclusive dress code that respects and represents all students' identities. Your signature can make a difference.
