As a member of the Order of the Arrow (OA), the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision to prohibit lodges from using traditional regalia. This change is not only impacting our ceremonial traditions but also leading to a decline in membership across many lodges. 

The cultural elements and symbols used by the OA are deeply rooted in respect and appreciation for the Lenni Lenape culture, and we've always strived to honor them in our ceremonies. Tribes across the country have expressed their support for the OA's use of regalia, as it upholds the traditions and values that are central to our organization and fosters a deeper understanding of Native American heritage among our members.

Moreover, the decision to ban regalia should not be a blanket punishment for all lodges. Instead, it's crucial to address issues where they arise—intervening with individual lodges that may be disrespecting cultural traditions or misrepresenting them. Not every lodge deviates from respectful representation, and it is unfair to penalize lodges that have received tribal support for their ceremonial practices.

The OA has historically worked closely with Native American communities to ensure that our use of regalia is appropriate and respectful. The voices of the Lenni Lenape, whose culture is the foundation of our ceremonies, should be paramount in decisions about what is appropriate in our regalia use, not blanket policies enforced without considering diverse perspectives.

I urge the OA and Scouting America to reconsider this decision and allow lodges to continue using regalia in a manner that respects and honors the cultural significance it represents. A collaborative approach, involving direct dialogue with tribes like the Lenni Lenape and specific accountability measures for individual lodges, can foster respect and growth within our community.
