Allow LIM Lighthouse Team members to join Peer Leaders

Allow LIM Lighthouse Team members to join Peer Leaders

The Issue

For many students, the transition to 8th grade marks a pinnacle of their middle school journey, a time when leadership opportunities are abundant and eagerly anticipated. As a 7th grader at our school, I've long looked forward to joining the esteemed Peer Leaders program. However, I, along with many others, have recently been disheartened to learn that students on the LIM Lighthouse Team are barred from participating in Peer Leaders.

The Peer Leaders program is not just an extracurricular activity; it is an esteemed opportunity for students like myself to grow, lead, and positively influence peers. It allows students to develop critical leadership skills, enhance their communication abilities, and foster a stronger sense of responsibility. These are invaluable skills that can greatly impact our high school careers and beyond.

At the core of my disappointment is the school's decision to limit these opportunities based on existing participation in similar groups. I am saddened that being part of the LIM Lighthouse Team, a program that also nurtures leadership, prevents me from further honing such skills in Peer Leaders. The very skills celebrated in the Lighthouse Team are exactly what would make us valuable assets to the Peer Leaders.

Given the mutual goals of both programs—encouraging leadership, building character, and fostering community—it is perplexing that students are forced to choose one over the other. Leadership should not be exclusive or limited; rather, it should be fostered through diverse experiences and challenges.

We urge the school administration to reevaluate this policy and allow students who are part of the LIM Lighthouse Team to also participate in Peer Leaders. Such a change would not only align with the school's mission of nurturing well-rounded individuals but also reflect a commitment to supporting students in pursuing all avenues of leadership and community service.

If you, too, believe in the importance of open opportunities for developing future leaders, then your voice matters. Please sign this petition to advocate for equal access and allow all students the chance to join Peer Leaders, regardless of their current commitments.
