Allow LGBTQ individuals to donate blood

The Issue

For far too long, outdated policies have prevented millions of willing, healthy LGBTQ individuals from contributing to the life-saving practice of blood donation. Our governments have held onto a discriminatory ban under the guise of reducing HIV transmission in the blood supply, yet this is a narrative that belongs in the past. In reality, HIV does not discriminate. Anyone can be affected, and medically advanced screenings can now identify HIV in blood donations, mitigating any risks.

This exclusion is not just irrational, it’s harmful. Thousands of patients rely on blood donations for survival, and restricting a vast segment of the population from donating only serves to reduce the available supply of blood. The current policy is a remnant of a time less informed than ours; a time before rigorous testing methods were developed—testing that today ensures all donated blood, regardless of the donor’s sexual orientation, is safe.

Countries worldwide have moved beyond this archaic stance, adopting policy based on behavior rather than orientation. For example, in 2015, the United States reduced its lifetime ban to deferment, and in 2020, Australia shortened its deferral period to just three months of abstinence—policies still discriminatory, yet indicative of progression.

It’s time our nation joins the ranks of progress by revisiting these outdated regulations. By implementing behavior-based screening, we can more accurately assess the risk of HIV in blood donations. Such measures have been shown to be far more effective and equitable. LGBTQ individuals deserve the same respect and trust as any other citizen.

Let’s urge our health authorities to modernize our blood donation criteria to reflect current scientific understanding. Let us redefine the narrative that excludes LGBTQ individuals from donating blood. Stand with us in demanding the government to drop these exclusionary practices and allow everyone, no matter their sexual orientation, to contribute to saving lives.

Sign this petition to encourage policy change with compassion and reason, making the world a healthier, more inclusive place for all.
