I remember the way I felt the first time I put on makeup. The foundation smoothing out my complexion, the mascara giving a dramatic flair to my eyes, and the lipstick adding a pop of color made me more confident. Like so many students, I felt ready to conquer the classroom. But now, a new rule bans makeup and lashes at our school, and it has left many of us feeling vulnerable and insecure.

This issue is affecting not just me, but countless students. Our self-expression and individuality are being stifled by rules that, frankly, do not contribute to learning. Taking away the personal choice to wear lashes and makeup is not alleviating any distractions—if anything, it creates distractions by forcing people to focus on their insecurities. When students are forced to sit in isolation simply for wanting to feel good about themselves, it inhibits the learning environment and fosters resentment.

Beyond personal empowerment, wearing makeup and lashes is a form of artistry and self-expression. It's no different from choosing to wear a certain kind of clothing or hairstyle. Studies show that when students feel confident, they're more engaged and productive. A 2019 study by the University of Tokyo even found that self-presentation has positive effects on cognitive function and stress relief. In this competitive academic environment, where mental stress is already high, why increase the burden unnecessarily?

Can administrators really claim educational benefits will increase by enforcing this rule? There's no evidence lashes or makeup negatively impact academic performance. Instead, the focus should be on enhancing educational resources and support systems, rather than restricting personal choice.

A realistic and effective change is simple. Allow students the freedom to wear reasonable makeup and lashes. Establish guidelines focusing on moderation rather than outright bans. Encourage a dialogue between students and administrators to set fair and understanding rules. Together, we can create an environment that values both education and personal expression.
