Allow Lafayette County animals access to the Oxford shelter

The Issue

Lafayette County, Mississippi, has no animal shelter—and no plans for one. Animals dumped outside Oxford’s city limits are not allowed to receive help from Oxford’s new shelter.

Why?

The city and county cannot agree on a county budget.

The city blames the county; the county blames the city. Meanwhile, who suffers? Animals like Banjo, pictured.

Starving, scared Banjo* was dumped—almost TWICE in one weekend—as a direct result of the county having no shelter.

Dozens of animals like Banjo have been dumped in the county in June alone, left to starve; be tortured by mange, ticks and fleas; and potentially be picked up for dog fighting or baiting. Animal rescuers—even in neighboring counties—are burned out and in tears, unable to take all the animals. They’re out of money and space.

All because our city and county leaders cannot agree.

One source tells us the county supervisors “don’t think it’s a big deal” because they aren’t getting many calls from the public.

Do you think it’s a big deal?

We call on Mayor Robyn Tannehill, the Oxford Board of Aldermen and the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to work together to immediately open the new Animal Resource Center (shelter) to county animals as well as city ones. Animals are suffering right now. They cannot speak for themselves, so we speak for them. Please find a solution now.

*Banjo was rescued last-minute and adopted by a wonderful family. His new name is Hank. He is one of the fortunate ones. He would likely have starved to death had humans not stepped in. This petition is our chance to speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves.
