The Issue

Living on Indigenous land, I've become deeply aware of the ongoing systemic challenges that Indigenous Peoples in British Columbia endure. It is profoundly personal to me, as I strive to contribute meaningfully to Truth and Reconciliation, hoping to bring happiness and justice back into the hearts of Indigenous communities. If we are entitled to have our names as we wish, why are Indigenous Peoples still denied this fundamental right, intrinsic to their identity and heritage?

In British Columbia, Indigenous Peoples often face numerous barriers when attempting to access essential services due to the imposition of English names on official IDs. This not only disrespects their cultural heritage but also perpetuates a legacy of oppression. Additionally, the lack of postal codes on Indigenous reserves creates logistical nightmares, complicating the delivery of mail and accessibility to services many of us take for granted.

The Canadian government's commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action is meaningless if we don't address these critical issues. Indigenous Peoples should be able to have their true, Indigenous names reflected on all forms of identification, acknowledging their heritage and re-establishing their dignity. Moreover, the government, in collaboration with Indigenous nations, should work to assign appropriate postal codes to reserves, facilitating smoother access to services and resources.

These aren't just administrative tasks; they are symbolic of our respect and recognition of the Indigenous communities. They represent a step towards healing and genuine reconciliation, addressing long-standing grievances and making amends for past injustices.

I urge the government of British Columbia and concerned authorities to rectify these systemic issues. Grant Indigenous Peoples the right to use their true names on all identification forms and ensure that reserves are equipped with proper postal codes, with full consent and cooperation from the respective bands. This is not just a policy change but a stride toward equality, respect, and a brighter, shared future.

Join me in supporting this essential change. Let's work together to ensure that British Columbia fosters an inclusive and respectful environment for all its peoples. Sign this petition to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Indigenous Peoples today.
