Allow Indians to Exchange their Driving Licences in UK.

Allow Indians to Exchange their Driving Licences in UK.
The Issue
Why this matters:
I came to the UK with over 15 years of safe driving experience, but my Indian licence isn’t recognised. I had to spend hundreds of pounds, wait months for a test, and lost job opportunities — even though I was already an experienced driver. For me and thousands like me, this is not just about convenience. It is about fairness, dignity, and being able to support our families while contributing fully to the UK.
Background:
Currently, Indian licence cannot be exchanged for a UK licence. This forces experienced drivers — with 5, 10, or even 15+ years of safe driving — to retest as beginners. This costs money, causes delays, and prevents people from taking up driving jobs, especially in transport and delivery where there are major shortages.
India use right-hand drive vehicles on the left side of the road, the same as the UK. Their systems are far closer to the UK’s than many other countries whose licences are already exchangeable.
Benefits for migrants:
· Removes unfair barriers for skilled, experienced drivers.
· Saves families hundreds or thousands of pounds in unnecessary costs.
· Allows immediate access to jobs in transport, delivery, and logistics.
· Supports financial stability and integration for long-term UK residents.
Benefits for the UK Government and economy:
· Higher tax revenue: more people in work means more income tax and National Insurance.
· Boost to businesses: transport and delivery sectors fill vacancies faster, increasing productivity and tax receipts.
· Increased spending: more drivers buying cars, fuel, insurance, MOTs, and paying vehicle tax.
· Reduced costs: less pressure on DVLA test centres and lower reliance on welfare support.
What we are asking for:
· Allow Indian nationals with Settled Status, ILR, britisher spouse visa or equivalent long-term visas to exchange their licences for UK licences.
· Apply this rule to those who have held a valid licence for at least 5 years.
· Recognise India as suitable for licence exchange, given the similar driving system, historical ties, and the huge contribution of these communities to the UK economy.
Who will benefit:
· Thousands of Indian families in the UK.
· Transport and delivery sectors struggling with driver shortages.
· The wider UK economy through greater participation and tax revenue.
