Dear Supporters, We hope this message finds you well.
We have an update that we wanted to share with you. We are delighted to inform you that we had a productive half-hour discussion with Mr. Cade Smith, the City Engineer for the City of Homewood.
Mr. Smith was also impacted personally by these storms and extremely helpful. During our conversation, Mr. Smith expressed a strong commitment from the City to work collaboratively with homeowners, including those affected by the tornado, especially concerning the removal of impacted trees.
We are also encouraged to learn that the delayed and difficult process that we personally went through for tree cutting in 2020, where we had to appear before city council (or one of its committees), is unlikely occur under current standards and policies.
Mr. Smith indicated that the City recognizes the current situation and is dedicated to facilitating a smooth and efficient process for homeowners seeking permits for tree removal. He assured us that the City does not anticipate denying any such permits.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Cade Smith for his understanding and proactive approach. His willingness to listen and respond to our concerns is an example of effective civic leadership.
Furthermore, we want to thank each one of you who has been a part of this journey. Your support, whether through signing the petition, spreading the word, or offering moral support, has been invaluable. As we move forward, we encourage those in need of tree removal to proceed with their permit applications, reassured by the City’s supportive stance. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
Once again, thank you to Cale Smith and every one of you for your involvement and support. Stay safe and strong,

Ultimately, homeowners are in the best position to evaluate the safety of a particular tree since they will be responsible for the costs of the damage.
Four Crest Lane residents with tree damage have signed this petition.
Acknowledgement and Limitation of Current Regulations
While the existing tree-cutting regulations commendably protect the urban forest, they have shown limitations in certain emergency situations. Notably, the recent severe weather events have led to property damages involving trees that residents had previously sought, but were denied, permission to remove.
Proposed Amendment
The petition proposes an amendment that allows for homeowner discretion in specific circumstances, aiming to balance the current environmental goals with practical safety concerns:
Enhanced Homeowner Discretion: Empower homeowners to remove trees they identify as posing a significant risk to their property or that of their neighbors.
Rationale for Amendment
- Direct Response to Recent Incidents: This amendment directly addresses the safety concerns highlighted by incidents where the inability to remove certain trees can result in property damage.
- Balancing Safety with Environmental Care: While preserving the integrity of Homewood's tree canopy, the amendment ensures that resident safety is not compromised.
- Community Safety and Resilience: By allowing homeowners to act in potentially hazardous situations, the amendment enhances the overall resilience and safety of the community.
Conclusion and Call to Action
This petition urges the revision of Homewood's tree-cutting regulations to allow for greater homeowner discretion in tree removal, particularly in cases where trees pose a known risk. This change is essential for ensuring the safety of Homewood residents while maintaining the city's commitment to environmental stewardship.
