Allow high schoolers in Groton, CT cell phone access during free time

Allow high schoolers in Groton, CT cell phone access during free time
The Issue
Living in Groton, CT, I have seen how using cell phones responsibly can greatly benefit a student's life. Smartphones are not only devices for talking to others; they also open up a world full of learning and help us stay organized.
However, the existing rules in our high schools greatly limit how students can use them, even when they have free time. This old method not only restricts our access to important resources but also raises stress and anxiety for students who depend on their devices for studying, staying organized, and sometimes taking a much-needed break. Letting students use their cellphones during free time can greatly improve their learning experience.
Students can complete their assignments, use online planners, and find helpful resources to support their learning. As digital skills become more important, preventing students from using their phones can limit their development and readiness for the future. Studies have found that students who can use their cellphones responsibly manage their time better and are more involved in online learning.
A study by the Pew Research Center found that 95% of teenagers have a smartphone. When used the right way, these devices can be important tools for learning. Additionally, letting students use their cellphones during free time can help reduce stress. Students can use cellphone apps for relaxation or mindfulness exercises during breaks or free time. This helps them go back to class feeling more focused and refreshed. It's important to adjust to today's technology.
We can create a better and more helpful school environment by changing our policies to match what our students need and the resources they have.
Please sign this petition to ask the Groton high school administration to think again and let students use their cell phones responsibly during their free time. Let's work together to create a change that will improve the learning experience for our high school students.
