Allow Green-Collared Greyhounds to be Off-Leash in Designated Areas
The issue
I adopted a dog from the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP), and it has been a life-changing experience. The joy of watching my greyhound play freely in the park or run along the beach would be unparalleled. However, current regulations restrict green-collared greyhounds from being off-leash even in designated areas such as dog parks.
South Australia is home to thousands of retired racing greyhounds who are part of GAP. These dogs, identified by their green collars, have passed an assessment indicating they have a low prey drive and are safe around small animals (source: GAP South Australia). Despite this, they are not permitted to be off-leash outside their homes. In some areas even resulting in a 5k fine per dog.
This restriction limits these dogs' ability to socialize and exercise adequately. It also deprives owners like me of fully enjoying our pets' companionship in public spaces.
Greyhounds are known for their gentle nature and adaptability (source: RSPCA). They deserve the chance to interact with other dogs and people freely under responsible supervision.
We propose that South Australian authorities amend current regulations allowing green-collared greyhounds to be off-leash in designated areas while adhering to park rules and land restrictions.
Please sign this petition if you believe that our green-collared friends should enjoy the same freedoms as other breeds. Let's give them the opportunity for full enjoyment of life post-racing!
