Allow funded sexual and intimacy support for Aussies with disabilities
The issue
Living with a disability presents a unique set of challenges, one of which is navigating intimate relationships. Unfortunately, the current National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) guidelines in Australia do not provide funding for sexual and intimacy support. This gap in the support system leaves many individuals struggling to experience a fundamental aspect of human life that others might take for granted.
For many people with disabilities, the opportunity to explore sexual and intimate dimensions of life would vastly enhance their quality of life, dignity, and personal autonomy. It is crucial for mental and physical health, self-esteem, and personal fulfillment. However, financial barriers and the absence of adequate support often make this difficult or impossible.
In Australia, there are over 4.4 million people living with disabilities. Of these, an estimated 7% to 10% express specific needs for sexual and intimacy support. Despite this, the NDIS currently does not fund such services, leaving many without the support they need to lead a fulfilling life.
We believe that changes to the NDIS could, and should, be made to allow for funding of sexual and intimacy support. These changes would include implementing clear and robust ethical safeguards to ensure this support is provided in a respectful and professional manner. By integrating these supports under the NDIS, we can ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to all aspects of life, promoting dignity and self-determination.
The evidence is clear. Losing the opportunity for intimacy due to a lack of funding exacerbates feelings of isolation and inadequacy. Comprehensive, funded sexual and intimacy support should be seen as a right, not a privilege. This is an opportunity for Australia to lead the way in recognizing and providing for all the needs of its residents.
We urge the Australian government and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to revisit and revise the NDIS funding guidelines. By signing this petition, you can voice your support for a more inclusive, dignified, and equitable support system that truly meets the holistic needs of all Australians living with disabilities.
Make your voice heard and support this necessary change. Sign the petition today and help bring dignity and autonomy to all Australians with disabilities.
